Steel beam weight calculator
Estimate the weight per metre and total weight of a doubly symmetric I-section steel beam from its dimensions.
How it is calculated
Area A = 2 × b × tf + (h − 2 × tf) × tw, in mm². Weight per metre = A × 10⁻⁶ × 7850 kg/m. Total = kg/m × length.
Worked example
b = 150, tf = 10, h = 300, tw = 6 mm: A = 4680 mm², 36.74 kg/m. For 6 m: 220.43 kg.
Steps
- Enter the flange width and thickness from the section table.
- Enter the overall depth and web thickness.
- Enter the length, then read the weight per metre and the total.
Frequently asked questions
Does this include root radii?
No. Rolled sections have fillets at the root, which add a few percent. Use the catalog mass for exact values.
Which steel density is used?
7850 kg/m³, the standard value for carbon structural steel.
Can I use it for a channel or angle?
No. The formula is for doubly symmetric I-sections. Use the section area for other profiles.
