Welding cost calculator

Estimate the filler metal mass, arc time and total cost of a weld from its cross-section, length and deposition rate.

How it is calculated

Filler mass (kg) = A (mm²) × length (m) × 0.00785. Arc time (h) = filler mass ÷ deposition rate. Total cost = filler mass × price + arc time × labour rate.

Worked example

20 mm² weld, 10 m, 3 kg/h, filler $5/kg, labour $30/h: 1.57 kg, 0.52 h, total $23.55.

Steps

  1. Enter the weld cross-section from the drawing or the weld size.
  2. Enter the weld length and the deposition rate of the process.
  3. Enter the filler and labour prices, then read the total cost in the same currency.

Frequently asked questions

Does this include gas and power?

No. Add shielding gas, power and consumables such as tips and nozzles separately.

Why do I need deposition rate?

It is the mass of filler per hour of arc time. It depends on the process, current and wire size.

Does it include the duty cycle?

No. Real arc-on time is often 20 % to 40 % of the shift. Adjust the labour rate or the hours.
